This isn't anything I hold against them, sometimes you just need to do something else!

What is concerning is we haven't seen any recruits to replace them. In terms of DPS this isn't really a problem, we usually have enough. In terms of heals and tanks it becomes more problematic.

Our three tanks are very consistent, but we came across the issue last night when the usual OT was gone and I filled in, that the fight where 3 tanks made our lives so much easier (Maloriak) came up, we had a bit of pause. It's very hard to get an additional person ready to tank a raid. Part of it is gear needs to go to your usual tanks, part of it is it's hard to convince people to spend DKP on a set that may be used once every three weeks, when they'd rather save it to outbid someone on a piece they need now. I don't really have a solution (I've accepted that I just have to min bid on everything and hope for the best, since I'm a pretty even 50-50 split between roles).

Healing is sort of a nightmare. Last Sunday we had four healers not show up, and simply could not raid. We got through all our farm content last week, but no real time to speak of in progression.

I think part of the issue is that current raiding really isn't that hard. It is difficult, that is for sure, but right now the server supports at least 15 raiding guilds that have, at minimum, killed two bosses. To a progression guild that doesn't sound like a lot, but to a social, two bosses that are perceived as difficult can be enough to stay with a not-so-great guild. I think the less talented guilds need to hit a wall in difficulty and break up, so that the better players in them start applying for the guilds with more progression.

It's not malicious, it's just a symptom of a problem I saw coming back when dozens of new guilds popped up at 4.0 mass recruiting: The server's population is spread too thin, and while it should eventually correct itself, the interim is very annoying.

Has a comic

Has a screenshot

Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-20553007158101267812011-01-28T08:45:00.000-08:002011-01-28T08:54:35.229-08:00Still a very quiet existence for the Amyburr. Eventually starts its raid week on Thursday, and last night went extremely well. We cleared most of BWD and worked for an hour and a half on Nef.

I'm extremely pleased with current raid content I've decided. The mechanics are interesting and I'm starting to get over how much it sucks as melee (mages and warlocks are totally balanced, in other news)....

Beyond that, my progression thread in the forum finally got stickied, my DK tanked a messy but successful guild run of SFK (that really reminded me of a month ago, just with people who are only now catching up). The paladin hit 85 and is swooping around gathering herbs for me. The shaman is somewhere at 82 at will probably be played tonight.

I've got 17 finished darkmoon decks in the bank, which isn't a whole lot, but I would also estimate a good 30 decks or so are sitting unfinished and waiting on ONE card to appear on the AH for a reasonable price.

I did give up on the idea of Long Strange Trip on everything for now. I just don't feel like it's a good use of time. It made sense at the end of LK, which was so boring you could hear dust falling on TOGC (may it rot in hell), but now I have SO. MUCH. STUFF. that should probably be done first. Such is life.

Also think I'll cancel my second account for the moment for the same reason - no time to focus on it, probably shouldn't waste the money!

Considering entering and Alt-z page to a comic contest, and that's about it.

Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-21487215311499025402011-01-22T09:52:00.000-08:002011-01-22T09:53:59.779-08:00Here ya go

Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-10351001765995579072011-01-21T08:35:00.001-08:002011-01-21T08:44:01.272-08:00I was feeling pretty damn proud of myself for both finishing a complex Alt-z on time and then remembering to upload my screenshots. And then I apparently fatfingered and uploaded the wrong Alt-Z file. LOlllllllll no matter how hard I try I just suck.

And then
Still not a whole lot of thoughts this week. Overall progression has been good, a few pieces of purples have been thrown my way (wheeee). My paladin got to 85 so now I have a max level herbalist, and subsequently was able to level my druid's alchemy.

I've poked a little more at Darkmoon Faire rep. Not a lot, a little. Still buying cheap cards whenever I see them, but only carrying about 16 completed decks. I suppose if I felt inspired I could farm up a bunch of herbs to get decks made.

I'm still running into a weird problem where people are addressing me like I'm an officer. I don't know why because I'm the last person you'd want in a position of authority. But still, every time a decision is made someone doesn't agree with, they ask me, as if I knew what was going on :P

I haven't really wanted to focus on gearing the pally and death knight, partially because it really feels like it would take me quite some time, partially because they're not associated with my guild and I learned to really hate the LFD system last expansion. For now it's just focusing on Amy, and when she's done reevaluating the sitation.

Have some screenshots
I promise I'll get that comic up when I get home ;_;

Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-71753880456088825442011-01-14T09:10:00.000-08:002011-01-14T09:22:40.228-08:00Whee
I don't have a lot of opinions this week, most likely because I'm exhausted but oh well! The guild's raiding is in full swing, downing 5 bosses last week, hopefully adding a 6th this week. I got a nice pair of shoulders, and enough points to buy my tier legs, so everything is going pretty well. I like most of the encounter designs (minus some favor to ranged, and some really shitty threat mechanics that one-shot me a lot but are avoidable now that I know about them :P).

The instances are pretty and I'd show you except I forgot to upload my screenshots again. Doesn't that sound like me? So I'll do that later tonight.

The other thigns
My DK finally got 525 enchanting, and we have a massive amount of shards (if no other mats because someone used them to level enchanting), so I should now be able to create all the enchantments we need for our gear (yay!). Next I probably need to level my paladin to 85 to gather green drops, as well as continue her herbalism to level my druids alchemy. After that it's probably focusing on my DKs blacksmithing for cheap belt buckles, and the shaman's leatherworking for leg enchants (I nearly screamed when I saw epic leg enchants going for 1000g... I guess it has a rare ingredient?).

Nuu kitty nuuu
Lots of druid nerfs in the patch notes for 4.0.6, but most of it I feel pretty neutral about. The bleed changes were actually a slight (probably unnoticeable) buff, most of the big theorycrafters think that the bear nerfs will bring our threat in line with prot warriors so that's reasonable, and I don't really voluntarily pvp enough that I'll probably see a big change with the shapeshifting gutting. That loss of fear immunity on beserk is going to suck a bit in SKF tho >:|

But like I said, not a whole lot of opinions to be had!Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-83351656659275185182011-01-07T09:37:00.000-08:002011-01-07T09:59:41.634-08:00Hamigad, it's the new year. I'm sort of a big bag of failure because I didn't feel like updating during my vacation at all.

I had a motherboard replacement, which in turn required a hard drive upgrade. Which I did without grabbing files from the old one. It's a nice bit of 'oops' that I'll try to fix tonight, but essentially boils down to that I am aware I'm missing several weeks of screenshots, and they do exist, but I can't really easily get to them quite yet.

Oh right! Raiding!
Last night was Eventually's real first go at raiding, and actually it was pretty damn fun. We did more than anyone was expecting (I was astonished we had enough healers!), and while it wasn't wipeless, Omnotron and Magmaw both went down. We only had a small bit of time left so we wandered over to Maloriak (...who I swear looks like a really bad Alexstraza cosplayer), and got him to around 35% on our best go. Not too shabby, hope to see him down on Sunday, and then on ward and upward!

WTF Forums
I went to post up progression on the realm thread (it's sort of my thing) and discovered that the person who had taken it over last month had disappeared! So I made HMMMMM noises and decided to make my own. We'll see if it takes.

The new Blizzard forums are sort of annoying for this task, and I'm wondering if it's on purpose. A realm progression thread, especially one as UNNECESSARILY SPRAWLING as Spirestone's (I tried to keep something close to our old format) takes up several posts. So what I did was get the first one ordered as I wanted, post, and then claim the next three posts quickly so I can go back and edit them.

The thing is, large edits seem to intentionally throw back an 'Internal Server Error: 500'. I can make small edits, like adding an underline tag, but after a whlie the server simply refuses to accept large edits adding anything (deleting is fine), like the final of the four posts which was the old 'rules' for eligibility. Maybe I'm placing malice where ignorance is really the case, but it's damned annoying.

What I have now does at least fulfill the job better than the old thread, so fine, I guess I'll just live with it. I just wish I could format it prettier :/

And the rest
Right now most focus is on my druid. Her tanking and cat sets are actually mostly finished, with the cat set needing a few more points for new pants, and the bear set completly devoid of updated trinkets. Overall pretty nice.

I'm not sure what I think of current gearing spreadsheets, as both Mew and Rawr seem like they're not quite finished (though, I'm not sure Mew ever has the intention of suggesting gear like Toskk did). Overall choices seem a bit tight in any case, so for the moment it doesn't matter that much.

My DK is 85 and casually poking at normal instances when I have the energy for it. Tanking as blood feels very simple, though I've found many annoying mobs in instances that are immune to death grip. A guildie hit 85 on their prot warrior shortly after me, and wanted to tank instances for practice. So I found myself in a set of greens, no glyphs, speccing into unholy and reading an EJ page on their dps rotation that I still don't really understand, and pulling some ridiculous DPS despite it all (what I'm saying is either my feral needs a buff or unholy is INCREDIBLY OP jesus).

My paladin is sitting at 82 mainly because my vacation is over so I don't really have time to maintain a third character. I really do need to finish leveling her though, so I have a maxed herbalist to support my druid's alchemy. Poot.

Each character has gotten a thorough bag and bank cleaning as I prepare to take them out into Hyjal, and it's amazing how much crap I've kept over the last two years on each of them. So much trash!

Yawnnnn

Through everything I've still been collecting cheap Darkmoon cards from the AH and building decks. Keeping in mind that I'm collecting for two people, I haven't gotten very far, but at the moment am sitting on 16 completed decks and several very close to completed decks. We also have a nice stockpile of thorium widgets from my farming for arcanite crystals two months ago, so if I'm smart we'll sometime remember to turn them in and free up guild bank space.

Screenshots

Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-80537083209746817072010-12-17T14:43:00.000-08:002010-12-17T15:28:54.400-08:00Is Friday again and I've talked my way into two weeks of vacation starting in an hour (huzzah).

I hope everything is going swimmingly for you as well.

And then I was a bear
I was hoping that, since we have several people who've declared themselves tanks, that the guild would be more active in terms of heroics at the moment. There's a few problems with the plan, though. Only 2-3 level 85 healers. And only 2-3 of the people identifying as tanks are running heroics as tanks. The others seem more like dps who want a short queue (which isn't bad, only it means they will opt to run with you as a dps rather than start their own groups).

I was really worried about heroics. What it came down to was changing my mindset into something closer to progression raiding. Wipes happen while you learn. There was a lot of concern about tank threat coming into heroics, but I find that it feels comfortably between BC and LK in terms of execution - Bear tanking takes a lot of effort, but it will reward you if you do it right. I think that's good.

So far I've only done 4 heroics as a tank, being stonecore, dm, sfk, and throne of tides. My favorite of the bunch of stonecore, my least sfk. Most of the boss fights in all these places were interesting and in a few cases, made me feel like my skill made a huge difference in success (3rd boss in stonecore, in particular, is nearly 100% tank positioning and made me feel pro once I figured it out). SFK earned 'least liked' because the interior design is 5 years old, and made before I think Blizz really understood what a player needs to perform well - The ceilings are too low and the spaces too cramped. It's very difficult to see what you're doing and how to move. I don't know if they could have changed that without a lot more work, but I really wish they could have.

It is worth doing, I think, under the condition that you go strictly for the game play. If you go for rewards, you might be a little underwhelmed that you spent 45 minutes for a blue something. It's a very good blue something, but it feels out of proportion.

You're encouraged to be good to your healer. Healing is rough. I have the benefit of my pocket healer being my boyfriend, but it still took us some adjusting. There is trial and error while strategies and specs were worked out. I was very pleased with our second night of heroics, as it was so much smoother than the first. Be nice!

GOGOOGOOGOGOOGOGOOGOGOOOMG
So we're a little over a week into this expansion and suddenly my guild had decided it wants to start raiding.

I'm not sure what I think about it. Whether or not I want to go I'm excluded because I didn't see the post fast enough. Really, the whole thing is supposed to be a new experience but it really feels like more of the same. We don't have enough healers to support one group, let alone two, at the moment. This has been the case for a loooong time and lead to a lot of begging and pleading on my part in ICC. Here there's a huge bottleneck from several sources.

-Currently, only two of our previous healers is 85 are still a healer, though only one may be raid ready, and only one of our previous dps went healybeams
-Healing in general is a huge huge burden at the moment. I haven't tried it myself, but I recognize just from watching heroics that the game has changed, and many people may not find it fun anymore
-We don't seem to be actively recruiting. This is sort of a catch-22. We're not recruiting because we don't have enough to do raids, but we don't do raids because we can't recruit.
-We only seem to have two tanks in guild, myself and the organizer of the group trying blackwing decent this weekend, who are currently doing heroics. We have other people with tank specs but they all have either opted to stay in normals or tag along as dps in my groups. What this means is that we're gearing up slower. I can't force anyone to tank any more than I can force them to heal.

What will be interesting is to see how fast the ball gets rolling. It's possible that next week there will be a bigger pool of 85s available, and with word that we're starting raids, more healers could appear. Possibly. I don't know.

I was considering starting my own ten man, and then the realization came that 10 and 25 share a lockout. Anything that I build now will have to be rebuilt as an alt and 'absent for 25s' group - which isn't bad, and that's what my ICC group originally started as, but there it is just the same.

(can you tell I really dislike the idea of handing decision making over to someone else, despite all the bitching I did about how much it sucks?)

Really I should just not worry about it. The expansion, she is young. I have the next two years to be angry.

Weekly Screenshots
<img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/323.jpg" width=200"><img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/324.jpg" width=200">
<img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/325.jpg" width=200"><img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/326.jpg" width=200">
<img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/327.jpg" width=200"><img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/328.jpg" width=200">
<img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/329.jpg" width=200"><img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/330.jpg" width=200">
<img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/331.jpg" width=200"><img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/332.jpg" width=200">
<img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/333.jpg" width=200"><img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/334.jpg" width=200">
<img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/335.jpg" width=200"><img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/336.jpg" width=200">Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-32084145557188011132010-12-10T14:58:00.000-08:002010-12-10T15:22:36.798-08:00Catakizzums!Oh boy it's Friday and the Cataclysm has come.

Isn't it great?

So, I haven't gotten to play crazy amount this week - December is just a really busy time for me (the 8th was my birfday :3). Right now I'm sitting very close to dinging 83, hopefully will be somewhere in 84 by the end of the weekend, we'll see. No huge rush and probably doing it all ass-backwards anyway!

My boyfriend and I finished Hyjal last night and moved into Vasj'ir, which means we're bigger than everyone else there and can shove them around. Hyjal was a very nice zone with a cool story, I'm not sure how I feel about Vasj'ir. It's neat, but there's so much color and clutter everywhere that I have a hard time concentrating :P

My long lost love

This post is so late in the day because I spent my free time making a loot list! OMG. I haven't had one of those since.... well T9's been wiped from my memory so maybe that's why I haven't had one in a while.

A loot list is a wunnerful thing. It's like having Christmas everyday - you know exactly what you want and you wrote it out and the heroics are never going to give it to you. Constant anticipation and constant disappointment.

All kidding aside, I like the loot list because it allows me to determine beforehand, using stat weights found on the appropriate blogs or elitist jerks and plugged into wowhead, whether or not something is an upgrade. It's time consuming but it keeps you from holding up the group or taking something you don't need later on.

It doesn't have to be a pretty list, just something you understand, I put mine in a notepad file. I also keep little files of my achievements, as well as one that tracked raid attendance for my 10 man while we were working on 'Glory of Whatever'. I love my little notepad files.

I went through and ranked all the pieces for each of my specs (being an OT is fun like that - TWICE the disappointment for the price of one!!!!), and have a section that separates everything by zone so I know exactly what I'm looking for in each one. I have no idea why I'm so excited about it, but I am.

(Picture Unrelated)

I wasn't expecting to be able to play my main this week, so I had started a worgen druid, who's only level 11 at the moment. She isn't hideous but she is hillarious. I'm torn between being disappointed with the poor level of work that went into her (one face type with the constant snarling that bear druids have hated forever, one hair color...), but I find the whole thing so goddamned funny that it's hard to be angry.

The best problem with her so far has been /lol has produced a sound I suspect is supposed to be /chicken.

Overall the quest design has been nice, and the zones have been put together well - though Gilneas does have you do a lot of running. Eep.

As an aside, I'm undecided how I feel about starting the comic thing again. What I did for this one took a lot less time than the old version, but it's still more intense than just the weekly doodle. Also it's hard to be funny enough to want to draw it.

We'll see I suppose.

Screenshots of the weeeeek

Still going doublebubble on these. I actually took close to 100 this week, had a rough time narrowing it down to just 14 :O

Hmm... #321 seems to be missing. I guess I'll find it later tonight :D

Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-13185458142854101102010-12-03T08:31:00.000-08:002010-12-03T10:10:15.837-08:00Amigad it's Friday and these Poptarts are awfulSo I've been thinking of making this post for several weeks now but haven't been quite sure how to compose it. When it comes down to it, I think it's going to be quite long.

On top of that, I haven't posted screenshots in two weeks and I discovered that I was exactly 65 screenshots behind, so there are some extras this week to catch up (and will be double the usual for the rest of the month). So, yeah, monster post today.

Partners in Crime
Seeing as Cataclysm hits next Tuesday, this is a pretty relevant topic, but really applies to 'all the time'. WoW is a social game, by simple fact of being an MMO. Even when playing exclusively solo, you will find yourself interacting with other players. They may be brief interactions, yet there they are.

Sometimes it's a matter of mutual benefit (two people killing the same spawn take less time than each person individually), but others it's just fun to play with a friend.

Which is somewhat like saying water is wet, but I'd like take this to the next step for the more hardcore: Having a grinding buddy.

That Sounds Dirty
wink

But no seriously.

While a grinding buddy isn't a definite necessity, and of course everyone values time alone from time to time, a good partner in crime makes a looooong slog (like, oh, the Insane, perhaps?) that much more bearable.

Good qualities for your grinding buddy include:

- A shared goal - Even if it's a really heinous one, like all your reps ever to 999 exalted. Having someone to share the pain with is quite nice. Now, your goal can be 'shared' but doesn't have to be 'identical' to what your buddy wants.

- Shared gain - 'Shared gain' is actually more vague than it sounds. What I'm pointing at is that both parties should log off feeling like they've done something worthwhile. It doesn't have to be a tangible item. If you're helping a friend farm something without any interest in material gain, then you should end the night satisfied that your effort is appreciated. This is a responsibility for both (or 'everyone' if there's more than two of you) involved. If someone is resentful, you have done it wrong.

- An understanding of effort given - While ideally, your buddy and you are able to give in equal time, this isn't always the case. This doesn't mean that you've found the wrong friend, rather that you need to come up with a plan that works for both parties. There may be unequal amounts of effort put in, and that's fine, so long as everyone involved understands as much.

- Have some goddamned fun - I'm not even sure why this needs to be said but it's something that people need to be constantly told. Quite similar to the old joke of 'Doctor it hurts when I do this' 'So stop doing it', if you aren't having fun playing your goddamned game, stop. If you're angry and sick and tired of what you're doing, step back and do something else.

Why the Above is Important
What the entire list boils down to is a mutual respect for each other's time. You want to enjoy your game, and make sure your friend does too. It's such a simple, easy concept, yet finding people that grasp it can be quite difficult.

If you want to share a goal with someone, be honest about it. Don't say 'Come reroll to raid with us' when you mean 'Come waste time in guild chat and never expect an invite'. I've had WoW-friendships destroyed over this. Unfortunately, these past occurrences made me decide I'm never moving off my server to 'play with friends' again, because without fail 'play with friends' has always meant 'oh but I didn't mean it' some time after the character is level 67 (and while I'm not laden with regret, I am constantly annoyed over the loss of time that I could have spent with people who do respect the effort I put in).

And so, but then
Beyond butthurt whining, how does this apply to me?

Well, my boyfriend was my grinding buddy long before he was my boyfriend. Take from that what you will. wink

We have our hands in many soups at the moment, so here's some basic application of the above.

- The Insane - Is a slow, slow thing. Even though 25% of it was removed in 4.0.3! He's also closing in on finals week, so hasn't been able to play that much.

I've completed grinding out all the lockboxes for Ravenholdt rep (my Real-ID status, in response to whispering to me about how ~*~awesome~*~ the world is post-shattering, has been 'Wow, LBRS looks exactly the same!). But I still make a short, daily trip back every day on my rogue so I can send him lockboxes. It's not a huge amount of time, and compared to what one needs it seems a rather pitiful amount, but it's progress, anyway.

I've had him sit stealthed and occasionally hit a space bar nearby while I grind out Steamwheedle rep for both of us. It's a little depressing on my own - when he's able to help it's about 4000 rep an hour for Booty Bay compared to my pitiful 1.5k alone, but it's still better to work on it slowly than not at all, and in a manner where he can study while I work is fine by me.

I'm slowly accumulating Darkmoon cards on the side. This is a bit tougher because the inscription vendor in Dalaran changed, so he doesn't accept Northrend ink for lower ones anymore. He only accepts Cata ink. Which doesn't exist yet. What this meant is farming herbs is currently not worth the amount of cards I get out. In Cata it will be, but not now. So I stalk the auction house constantly and pick up cards for the both of us, using the money the guild bank has accumulated from selling excess materials we've had all expansion.

- Thundarfurry - His rogue accidentally a binding. There was only one thing for it - put the damn sword together. He's able to farm for the second binding on his own. To keep me occupied in the time that he can't be on, I was sent on a quest to make 100 arcanite bars (in other news, transmute spec still hasn't procced enough to justify the 5 primal mights that went into it at the beginning of BC). The guild bank is now full of thorium that I haven't been able to sell (like, had to finally buy the last tab amounts of full).

We're also doing weekly BWL runs for ingots (4 so far zomg).

- For Cataclysm - I actually have to wait a week before I make my journey to 85, because he has to focus on finals, and I'd rather not dash off ahead. I'll still play, most likely try out a Worgen while I wait. And, of course, farm goblin rep (with my Real-ID message set to 'Wow, Grizzly Hills looks exactly the same, too!' the whole time). I don't mind waiting, as a week really doesn't matter that much (several guildies are also holding back for finals, so it's very likely I'll have a pool of people to drag around in instances and heroics anyway).

I also found out I still have two paid weeks of vacation left this year, so indeed, a lot of time to catch up :D

- RARF - Between the $20 deal for vanilla through lk and RAF, it seemed worthwhile to start a second account (my stupid character slots are full anyway! grr!). Right now it's a lot of sitting on one's hands until finals are over, but we were able to play a pair of night elf mages over Thanksgiving and discover that RAF combined with the new questing is pretty damned ridiculous. Like, 4 levels gained in Wailing Caverns ridiculous.

We hit 20 and set foot in Darkshore and I felt a bit guilty. It does feel a bit stupid to be 5+ levels over the quests, but you still want to do them because it's 'new'. We talked about it a bit and decided that at least some of our other characters would probably level together, but not in a party, to slow things down a bit.

I came to the conclusion that even through the bit of buyer's remorse with RAF, it's still not the end of the world. He gets a free month and a rocket, and I wanted the second account anyway. He also wants the night elf mage to level fast, to replace the draenai one he deleted to make room for it - and I generally can't stand leveling mages so having it go extremely fast is great.

The point was also made that, as soon as we hit 60 (which will be fast!), we can sit down and quest normally. All is well.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter that the quests are blowing by. The quests will always be there and they're not usually memorable. What is worth remembering is the fun we've had doing them - which we can do if they're 5 levels below or 5 levels above us. We'll remember that I died to standing in a green cloud of 'What is this' and then ran the opposite direction from my corpse because I followed the gold arrow pointing out a quest instead of the red on pointing at my corpse within viewing distance of the graveyard. Ah, and we'll cherish it.

Screenshots

Most of these were taken from a laptop on vacation which can't handle some of the new graphics.... but they're still pretty on the inside ;_;

Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-13360569454957734832010-11-19T09:01:00.000-08:002010-11-19T10:22:51.643-08:00Well, it's Friday again. About time, too!

Are we there yet?
Well, mmo-champion is predicting the shattering to take place either next week or the week after. And all I can think is about damn time. WotLK was a rather annoying expansion for me. Love my guild to death and have enjoyed poking around at this and that, but the raid and heroic instance design was just killing me :/

I'm sure there's someone out there who thinks WotLK was the best expansion ever and I regret to inform them that we can't be friends.

The elemental invasion has really been a let down. I wasn't a great fan of the zombie invasion for 3.0 because it was a great excuse for players to harass other players (especially low-levels and potential newbies - how fun it must be to have your first WoW experience, being corpse camped by your own faction!) and claim it wasn't their fault that 'Arthas' was ruining the game.

It seems like we're at the other end of the spectrum. I'm annoyed by the very idea that it happens at distinct times (roughly the top of the hour, every 2-3 hours). I like that people are given the chance to evacuate and not participate. I'm annoyed that I only have enough time to hit up one, perhaps two of the instances after the event (maybe I did it wrong). I'm annoyed that the guy I'm supposed to turn the kill quests in to is apparently in a different phase of Ironforge and in mine he's evacuated, so I can see his exclamation mark on the map but can't see him!

I'M ALSO REALLY ANNOYED THAT THE MAILBOXES DISAPPEAR. WHAT. WHY ARE THE ELEMENTALS STEALING MY MAILBOX.

So here's hoping that things are more interesting once Deathwing begins his reign of destruction! (An aside, threads on mmo-champ are claiming he's actively destroying random zones in the Beta as well as the PTR, which suggests he may be randomly destroying things until he's brought down in his raid :O)

This is a very cruel thing to do to someone
Blizzard has apparently changed the security protocols that monitor logins to Battle.net. How do I know? I got an email that my account had been locked yesterday :P Of course, the email being rather vague, once I'd verified it is authentic I went OH JESUS NO, MY PURPLES!, thinking I'd been hacked. But after checking the armory to see all my characters, even the enchanter, were still wearing their clothes, things turned confusing.

I called the support line, and got a girl with a simply adorable voice that unlocked it for me an helped piece together what was going on.

The new system appears to determine what is a normal pattern of behavior for you. If you suddenly log in from an IP address it hasn't learned to be associated with your account, it considers it suspicious and locks the account. What's annoying is there's no real way to 'teach' it aside from this trial and error game.

Making me spaz out and think I'd got hacked is very mean >:|

Sometimes I believe in as many as six impossible things before breakfast
Well, work on the Insane plugs on, slowly. I did the math last night and guesstimated that I need to go through LBRS pickpocketing at least 33 more times. After that I'll probably move on to flying around Northrend on my pally and picking herbs for Darkmoon cards. I realized that it would actually be sort of cool to pass those cards on to characters leveling in Cataclysm (I'm probably getting a second account, because no more character slots). It'd be awesome if I could sell them though.

Sreenshots pewpew

<img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/283.jpg" width=200"><img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/284.jpg" width=200">
<img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/285.jpg" width=200"><img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/286.jpg" width=200">
<img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/287.jpg" width=200"><img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/288.jpg" width=200">
<img src="http://darkelementals.com/365/289.jpg" width=200">Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-21501530249565141552010-11-12T20:14:00.000-08:002010-11-12T20:32:49.513-08:00

Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-69981219062551300632010-11-12T08:33:00.000-08:002010-11-12T09:49:58.629-08:00Again and AgainThis has been a pretty light week!... And I was so enamored with photoshop last night that I forgot to upload my screenshots again. Ohwell, something to do tonight :D

THE CLIFFS OF INSANITY
Ok so. I guess the big news is Insane in the Membrane is being 'fixed' so that it's completable in Cataclysm, and it just won't require Shen'dralar anymore. Which is a considerable nerf to the title.

This kind of surprised everyone. I certainly wasn't expecting it. It does feel a bit cheap to essentially skip 25% of the whole achievement. Those who did it the 'right' way will have at least an additional feat in the future, but I'm hoping that there will be an analogous feat in Cataclysm that can the the 'new' crazy bunch of rep to get. It's probably difficult to put in, as you essentially you have to create a faction that no one cares about, doesn't really benefit raiding, which is probably hard to justify in terms of development time. But here's hoping.

To celebrate, my grinding partner (THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID) and I hit up separate instances of LBRS and pickpocketed about 75 lockboxes between us. And now the guild bank is full 9.9

Durids!
As a personal reminder to myself, the Inconspicuous Bear put out an incomplete Gearing and Professions list for bear tanking at 85. While not finished, they're extremely helpful for putting together a plan!

Killin' Time
The guild as a whole has been somewhat counting down the minutes until Cataclysm hit, so over the last week raids of various sizes and seriousness have been put together to knock out achievements. I put together a group last friday that finished up 10 man T7, as well as Onyxia achievements for several people. In the name of arbitrary points!

More officially, the 25 man finally pushed several Glory to the Raider 25 ICC achievements to completion, so a large number of us got our Frosty Drakes. I have now broken and rebroken my mount macro several times trying to stuff him in, and somehow managed to put my sea turtle into the mix >:|

We also had a bit of a fiasco with our latest Shadowmourne box, where the quest bugged out and the GMs, for whatever reason, would only reward the wielder with one of the four items he was supposed to get. He chose the mount, which I had won the roll for. Which is freaking ossim, but it still really sucks that everyone else got screwed out of their items :/

Justicurr
Ugh. Well. I think a large part of my problem is I'm doing this either alone or with the boyfriend, and really, 1-2 people will find it very hard to change the course of battle. It's not impossible, it's just sometimes more than I care to try. I mean how many times can you stand watching your entire team dick off in the middle while the horde kills you with the flag without being a little angry.

Honor weekends turn out to be both better and worse, because you can physically see the rep bar move with each cap.... but there are so many premade teams you get paired against.

I did figure out, at some point, that I need 300 WSG and Arathi victories each, and then I'll be done, but that's some pretty depressing criteria.

I suppose really I need to make my own premade. Bah!

FACK YOU FISH
A little under 9,000 fish successfully caught later, my 9 alts are now all sitting pretty at 325 cooking skill. If nothing else, between this and the Candy Buckets of DOOM, I was able to run around the world one last time before it completly changed. Azshara in particular, while being so very useless, is very pretty, so you goblins had better take good care of it ;_;Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-16261848061054181882010-11-05T20:52:00.000-07:002010-11-05T21:07:57.955-07:00I've been having a love affair with the new water.

Anyway, two weeks of screenshots.

Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-73337589971777020942010-11-05T14:55:00.000-07:002010-11-05T16:01:19.263-07:00The Non-Raid LeaderI haven't had a lot of time to myself, so no pretty drawings, but I'll remember to add in weekly screenshots (2-3 weeks worth? lol) today or tomorrow.

THIS IS MADNESS

The Insane feat of strength, based off a comment made by staff during Blizzcon, seems to be going away with Cataclysm. Speficially, Shen'dralar and Bloodsail reps will no longer be attainable, though if you had the reps previously, they appear to stay in tact. In terms of Bloodsail, this doesn't matter too much. As said previously, two people working for four hours in Booty Bay can get the appropriate rep.

Shen'dralar is significantly more frustrating by nature of their rep gains, which is from very rare objects that typically take a person several months to gather. What's even more fun is the NPC that originally accepted these items has been confirmed on beta to be in the exact same place, just with the quest disabled.

More or less, it appears an achievement with individual steps that take months to complete, seems to have gotten a 'one month sort of but not really warning because we still don't have a clear statement two weeks after someone mentioned it in passing'.

Most of the community is theorizing that other reps will still count toward the feat (similar to how you can still get Hand of A'dal or Champion of the Naruu after 2.4, so long as you'd met certain goals before that point). Nothing is certain because Blizzard has yet to clarify exactly what's happening, so really, if you need one last rep, now is the time to do it.

I'm a little miffed that this happened like, a week after I decided to try for it, but overall I've not wasted that much time if I quit cold turkey, turn around, and sell my rep items for 5000g a piece. :/

Hallow's End
Was another non-event. I was surprised to find that my primary alt, the paladin, already had it completed. Two others, the priest and dk, simply needed a hallowed helm (...which they actually had in their banks but FOR WHATEVER REASON I GUESS DOESN'T COUNT). The other six needed more or less everything.

Actually, the constant trick-or-treating every hour did not bother me. What did was going to all the candy buckets. The travel time involved sincerely felt like I was spending more time watching my character, rather than controlling it. Cataclysm will help with flying mounts in the old world, so similar achievements won't be as bad. But good freaking lord I never want to fly from Ratchet to Cenarian Hold again.

Overall it took a total of five days to get everything complete.

I am not a raid leader
Last year, at....almost exactly this time, actually, there was a series of events in our ten man groups that can really be best described as 'Some of you are assholes'.

My guild's policy only really cares about our official 25 mans, held three days a week in the most 'recent' content. So 10s and alts and anything else is free for all, and while the officers often take part, they don't enforce any rules. You can probably see why this is good, and why it's not, really it just is what it is.

So, I came to the conclusion that my solution to the Ulduar issue was to take my ball and go home - aka make the raid myself and tell the assholes to suck it.

When ICC came out, the primary target of my scorn built a raid group with a severe focus on progression that would meet early in the raid week. I made a group that would meet weekends and 'do whatever', with the solitary rule that he couldn't come (because I have the emotional maturity of a 4 year old).

In terms of actual raid leading, I'm actually pretty bad. Very bad. I'll send out 13 invites thinking only 9 people logged on. I'd say 'it made sense at the time' but I've done it more than once.

I have to delegate a lot. My boyfriend, who came as an alt, was handed assist and masterloot so he could handle marking and THE ACTUALLY NOT THAT CONFUSING loot window. I also had to main tank, meaning I had to focus more on what I did than the group.

The group of people I got were actually very good at taking care of themselves. Like, I cannot praise them enough. When it came time to try Professor Putricide, I gave them an order of who to try to drop disease on, told them to be vocal on vent about where they're moving, and then ignored them every attempt while I danced with Putricide. And they did it perfectly.

On the subject of loot, the group was generous to a fault with each other. I had no rules about main spec or off spec, and the few times I was asked said simply 'Roll however you think will best help the 25 man group's progression'. There were several conversations that went 'you take it' 'no you take it'. There was not one loot dispute, despite the fact that we ran /roll the entire way.

I know I lucked out with my group, and I think a lot of it is because the guild as a whole maintains a very outgoing atmosphere - Most of us refer to each other by first name rather than character name (though I'm still 'Amy' because I frankly prefer it). One officer in particular makes very sure that no form of hate speech is tolerated.

Now, this wasn't all rainbows and unicorns. My offtank was constantly abusive to random raid members. I can't even remember why, it was just arguments about petty shit. After five weeks of trying, through several channels, to get him to calm down, I was very frazzeled. Then, when his girlfriend slept through invite time and thus, did not get an invite, he threw a tantrum. And I had it. I put him on ignore and never invited him back. I replaced him within ten minutes, the end.

Several of my raid members were initially pleased with my choice. As time wore on and the offtank started leaving me messages in the one place that not only could I not ignore him beyond not responding, but everyone else could see it - the guild forums - many of those same people would approach me and say they 'felt bad' for how he was being treated.

I don't really understand why, mind you. This wasn't a case of 'oh he said something once and now I hate him', this was a pattern of abusive behavior that would. not. stop. I even talked an officer into asking him to calm down two weeks before I permanently threw him out, and that didn't stop him. He tried to stop the raid when he realized he wouldn't get his way.

Some other time I'll debate with myself over why people will willingly put up with this shit, and why I become the bad guy for not wanting to.

Aside from the offtank, the only other reprimands I passed out were for two separate people who were asked not to use 'gay' as a pejorative. I'm not sure either apologized, but neither did it again, and that's good enough for me.

Now this whole thing was going somewhere.

I'm not a very good raid leader. I have to ask my members to police themselves, and was blessed with a group of people who did. Very well. But they weren't always happy with me. I had several people who complained I was being too mean with the offtank. I had people who thought I wasn't being strict enough with gear/alt/flask/foods. I had people who complained that the group comp was bad. I was constantly questioned about doing X instead of Y.

But they kept logging on every week.

And now that we can't run a 10 man icc without locking ourselves out of 25, they're asking me to organize things. I still run a TK raid every week with a freeroll on Ashes of A'lar - our newest guild recruit asked if he could come 'just to see the fight', and was shocked when I said he was free to roll as well. Several people have asked to do a ten man to finish off T7 achievements, and when I made a post asking who could come when, I got several more requests to do T9 and Onyxia as well. Two weeks ago the gentleman running our Herald of the Titans group was running late, and I logged on to find a note saying I was now in charge.

WTF.

I don't think I have great leadership. At all. I think what I have that these people are following is that I'm ok with being held accountable for decisions. I don't mean that they were unable to admit mistakes, I mean accountable for everything, even shit out of my control.

When 9 people log on for a 10 man, it's not my fault the group comp sucks. Half the group would want an achievement, half would want the hard mode, and I got to be the tiebreaker. The offtank was the one abusing people, but once he was out of sight, I was the one who got the flak for removing him. I had to call several raids because people were burning out after an hour of attempts. All stuff that does not make me popular.

This is what makes raid leading not fun. This is why most people really don't want to do it. It baffles the hell out of me. I can't really come to a conclusion about it beyond that.Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-75683832010312297972010-10-15T09:24:00.000-07:002010-10-15T11:37:34.974-07:00Picture UnrelatedMy first coherent thought about 4.0.1 was that it had better be at least as fun as Spore, Command and Conquer 3, and all my old psd files combined, because it had to occupy the space formerly taken by them (my first incoherent thought read something closer to 'amigadamigadamigad').

This is sort of like asking a trip to Coldstone Creamery to be at least as fun as a root canal, but I wasn't in a great mood after about 9 hours of trying to convince my laptop to download the patch.

Particular appreciation must be had for Command and Conquer, which fought for its right to live right to the bloody end - crashing Control Panel every time I told it to uninstall, and then, when I decided to do things 'the old fashioned way', screaming that the Recycle Bin was several sizes too small for its hips.

I finally got in around 10PST, in time to watch the server toss everyone out again. God bless patch day!

Feral Droods

So far I've spent most of my time focused on pulling my main back into working order. All the alts are mostly getting ignored until next week, when the Hallow's End event starts, but until people simply stop showing up, my guild is keeping its regular raid schedule.

Our first raid night of the week was last night, which is a night the usual OT can't make. So I spent the majority of the night as a bear. 4.0.1 Bear feels a whole lot like 3.3.5 prot warrior. It's not necessarily hard, but it is more interesting than spamming two buttons for trash. Overall I liked the rotation, and was very pleased with 'Vengeance', the attack power buff given to tanks that scales with raid size. It solved a lot of the annoying threat capping problems.

I'm not really a theorycrafter, I just pull together information from all over. Some good resources to be had for kittybears:

Mew - Kitty simulator - Mew is a direct desendent of Toskk, maintained by the most wonderful Yawning. It's a bit more picky than Toskk was, but this is supposed to lead to more accurate data. I'm hoping it will eventually have the gear suggestion functionality that Toskk did.

BadKitty2.0 - Kitty timer - Finally appeared this morning! BadKitty is an absolute must for kitty druids. It takes all your significant data - combo points, energy, debuffs, buffs, cooldowns, procs, and places it in one spot, instead of all over the screen. The author is starting fresh, so this is essentially a new mod with the old goal. It is in alpha, which has cut down on some functionality and features - but I promise you having it will be better than not.

Kitty DPS FAQ - Again by Yawning. Updated daily as minipatches work out balance issues.

ThinkTank - ThinkTank is a great pooling of information for both your tank things and your dps things. Very civil discussion about concerns with feral numbers looking forward.

THIS IS INSANE

It turns out to take roughly 20 minutes to completely destroy your rep with goblins. After that it takes about 4 hours to get honored with Bloodsail Buccaneers. Luckily, the statue that rests out in the middle of the bay allows you a brief respite to pretend you're Charlton Heston. Drop to your knees, inspect your reputation panel, and scream DAMN YOU. YOU BLEW IT UP. YOU BLEW IT ALL TO HELL.

If you're of the generation conceived, born, and raised in a Hot Topic, you may prefer to sing the entirety of 'Poor Jack'.

If you, too, want to make sure you can never fly out of Gadgetzan again, I highly suggest this very detailed guide by Fannin.

The next step after Bloodsail was wandering over to Dire Maul, as it would cover both Shen'dralar and goblins at the same time. What this lead me to discover is 'insane' doesn't really quite describe how I feel. 'Insanely Annoyed' is somewhat more accurate. Doing this with a partner (which I prefer, as the two of us seem to keep each other entertained instead of depressed), means roughly 400 runs of the instance for goblin rep, and 164 librams (of which there are three types that drop.... and are unique... and don't stack in a guild bank >:|). We worked at it for a few hours before we grew tired of the nonsense. It left me with about one bar through hated with goblins taken care of, and 12 librams that required a lot of running :|

Somehow, knowing that this portion of the Feat is the worst and it all gets better after this does not make me feel better about it. AT ALL.

Loremaster

It required a lot of flying in circles. Well. No. That's not true. It ended up in a lot of flying in circles because I can't follow simple directions or devise strategies. I'm one of those people who wastes time by doing one quest, turning it in, then going back and doing the other quest that was right next to it. I get better when it comes to quests I've done before, but as Loremaster implies I'm doing it because I didn't do them before... I was really all over the place.

I don't really have any 'techniques' to share because I'm inept, but the process also becomes very intuitive once Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms are out of the way. The game clearly tells you what you need to complete, and once you enable low level quest tracking, it shows you where. If you're a few quests short, WowHead's comments section on each achievement always has someone who suggests 'Look and make sure you did X'.

But, in any case, I finished out Outland. What remains is a handful of quests in Northrend, which I think could be done in an evening. We'll see.

Long, Strange Trip

I've been working harder on this than Insane. Fishing is actually not that bad a hobby, as it's not very demanding. Streaming the latest episode of Caprica in the background helps it, a lot.

For the 10 man ICC hardmode group I ran (until this week when such things would have hindered the 25 man raid a bit >>), I brought fish feasts, figuring it was the best way to ensure that people would stuff buff food in their faces (had I been rich, in retrospect, I'd probably have brought flasks for everyone too :P). I would fish in Wintergrasp while 25 man raids were being built, as it was a decent place to pick up all the fish I needed.

This teaches you, very quickly, to rotate your camera view to watch behind you, rather in front of you. No one is going to land in the water on your fishing bobber, swim to you, and attack you. Many people are very happy to land behind you in hopes of giving you a firm ass kicking.

This is a habit I brought with me as I fished out in the old world. It wasn't really a requirement, and last night was really annoying - anytime the earth quaked I got a strobe effect as the camera bounced above and below the water line.

What this resulted in was, as my death knight was fishing out in Arathi, a wee 36 blood elf snuck behind me across very difficult terrain to get to the Keep. I didn't do anything about it. I was very perplexed as I watched him clamber over rocks, at first thinking he was trying to sneak up on me, but he made no hostile moves. Then I faced my camera forward and realized he was trying to avoid my line of sight on the more obvious route of the road. Not quite as clever as he thought it was, but I gave him points for effort and let him go on his way.

More seriously, I've pushed 3 characters to 325 cooking skill since I started the project two weeks ago. The longest stretch of it really is between 225 and 300, which is to be expected. The guide I'm using has me doing this out in the middle of the Bay of Storms in Azshara, however, so I'm enjoying my last few times in the zone before it's handed over to the Horde. My fourth character is right at 225 and ready to spend her hour or so in Azshara, but she's also my AH alt so I have to time it so I don't leave her with full bags in the middle of no where :P

It takes roughly 950 successful casts to gain enough skill to support leveling to 325 cooking. If you're stupid your first time doing it like me, you'll fish in the wrong spot for half an hour and get your 1000 fish achievement.

Not Quite a Tearful Goodbye

Remember that today, Blizzard finally officially announced that Zul'Gurub's rare drop Tiger and Raptor mounts, as well as Raptor pet, are being removed. This has been suspected for some time now but is finally official.

If you're interested at all, you're probably already farming the mounts on lockout. Best of luck to you. If you're interested in the pet, WowHead says it's a 1% drop rate, and I guess I believe it. My farming partner and I smacked all the raptors up on three resets while going in for mounts, and had two hatchlings drop. Be advised that ZG is an old instance with oooooold trash mechanics. The trash will respawn even with Bloodlord defeated. You can farm the hatchling even if you've already cleared it.

You might also consider that, since ZG is changing, you may not be able to gain rep with the corresponding faction anymore. Perhaps save your bijous and try to finish that off, in case it becomes a feat of strength. If not, hey, you're a rep close to exalted!

WHALPS

Since we're here! Also keep in mind that certain pets are somewhat unaccounted for.

You're encouraged to get your Emerald, Crimson, and Azure whelps before the Cataclysm as well. The mobs that dropped them previously are missing on the beta.

Screenshots of the week

Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-73426021532541356102010-10-08T21:08:00.000-07:002010-10-08T21:12:41.703-07:00Weekly ScreenshotsAs promised, I remembered to upload them. Or maybe I'm the only one that felt WotLK had outstayed it's welcome around the time it became clear that to gain the most advantage, I had to run ToGC four times a week.

Just the same, the pre-expansion lull has always been a cool place to be. Everything's new at the same time it's old. If your guild is still raiding, you'll be limited to one ICC lockout a week, which may result in more free time for yourself.

I'm rather fond of setting myself a few long term goals in order to fill that free time. This isn't to say that you must play WoW because you can, only that if you choose to, you may find it rewarding to work to something that takes a good deal of time.

A long term goal doesn't have to make sense. A guildie of mine has determined she would like to hold 300k gold before Cataclysm hits, and hinted that she'd like to be gold capped on all her alts. We asked her why, and there really wasn't a better explanation than 'because'. It's more a case of 'why not', rather than 'why'. After all, would you really mind having 300k gold? Probably not, even though nothing you'll ever encounter will require it (not to mention, the only thing that could come close to that in value - Ashes of A'lar - she already has :P).

Really I wasn't in a place to criticize because I was farming Escape from Durnholde for Keepers of Time rep at the time this conversation happened, and that's probably infinitely stupider than working towards 300k gold.

Two weeks ago I managed to finally get every class to 80 before the expansion hit. What I gained from this was a deep understanding of why it's impossible to find raiding mages on my server (somehow they made a staple of every fantasy game so tragically boring that arguing over your tax return with the IRS would be more rewarding).

And now that I've had a chance to breathe and relish my victory over spamming arcane blast, it's time to grab myself a few new goals for the game ahead. I don't really have a timetable for these, but I think they'd be cool to have. But I have ordered them from what I'd most like to 'I'm ok with not getting carpal tunnel'.

- A Long, Strange Trip - for my Alt Army
- Ashes of A'lar - for my main
- Dark Phoenix...and her babyyy - for my main
- Bane of the Fallen King - for my main
- Justicar - for my main
- Insane - for my main
- Loremaster - for my main

All of which I'd like to give their own post when the time comes.

Brewmaster
Today I was going to talk a bit about gaining Long, Strange Trip on multiple alts. Again, I don't really have a reason, other than I don't actually see many people on purple protodrakes, so it's something a bit unique for the alts.

Hitting 80 when I did meant I could immediately set my focus on Brewmaster.

When my main did the event two years ago it required roughly 300-500 tokens to complete, depending on whether or not you wanted to keep the clothing items or the pet when you were done.

In patch 3.3 the title was changed, so it no longer required buying the clothing (or even buying the dozen or so kinds of alcohol to try!). I had no idea this had happened when I brought my alts to the event with five days left, and expected to have to return next year. With the changes, it only requires 202 tokens to get the achievement. 200 for the Brew of the Year Club, and 2 to change your mount into a ram (or presumably kodo, for horde).

Additionally, doing all the one-time quests will net you several tokens. And the daily to defeat the Direbrews drops a quest item on the ground that persists for about 15 minutes, meaning you can do the event on one character, and then log on to the others to reap the rewards.

What this meant was I shoved 7 characters through to Brewmaster in 2-3 days (the other 3 already had it), dependent on whether or not I accidentally clicked something that would dismount me during ram racing, not that that happened or anything >>

It's too late to do Brewfest on your own alts this year, but I assure you it's little more than a speedbump should you try it next year. However, ram racing dailies get really annoying around the 5th time you do them in a single day.

Merrymaker
I had been ignoring holiday events while I leveled them. I'd given up on the idea last year thanks to the most heinous requirement (behind Hard Knocks) - you need 325 cooking skill to finish Winter's Veil. If you're a raider, you should really already have this. But why would you ever do this on an alt?

So now that I'm trying again, I'm starting in on this one early. I decided to repeat my main's example, and leveling cooking alongside fishing. No matter what I do, there's going to be farming, and fishing at least doesn't require you move often to retrieve different animals. There are simple guides available via a google search to do this (like El's Extreme Anglin', the one I've been using - but remember to click responsibly for account security :3).

Fishing does get annoying very fast. My paladin is sitting at about 262 skill at the moment and skillups are coming about every 2-3 minutes. But it has the added benefit of not requiring much attention. A second window open to watch South Park episodes has provided much entertainment. It seems, just fishing in between other things I do, I can probably get one character a week to 325. Can probably cut it down a bit if I fish on weekends as well. I'll let you know in a few weeks how it's working out :3

Screenshots of the week
Appear to have not been uploaded to my file server (d'oh!). I will post them later tonight.

Happy WoWins'!Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5504334189667592575.post-87698985443245493462010-10-04T11:52:00.000-07:002010-10-04T11:53:47.011-07:00This blog has no real defined purpose beyond simply existing, but will become active with the launch of 4.0.1.

Happy trails 'til then.

Shannon Fowlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10951230248691746480noreply@blogger.com0
